ROREY
Single review by Brittany Ormiston
Singer-songwriter ROREY has taken her reality of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and turned it into a breathtaking collection of tracks for her upcoming EP Dysphoria. Her newest single ‘Sleepwalking’ depicts the experience of disassociation, and how it feels to be so distant from your own body and emotions. ROREY’s vocals take listeners into a dream-like state as the instrumentation fluctuates to emphasize the ebb and flow of the conscious and subconscious minds. The bass line is heavily present during the pre-chorus as ROREY sings “Sleepwalking // I’m sleepwalking,” whereas the bridge contains higher vocals and light instrumentation. ‘Sleepwalking’ is heavily relatable for many who encounter dissociation, and mental health struggles as a whole. To expand further, listening to this track and ROREY’s EP will allow you to plunge into your own psyche, connect with your emotional self, and build the emotional intelligence to navigate your own journey through life.
ROREY uses her music and songwriting as a part of her healing process throughout her mental health journey. Music has always been a part of her life, and when she was young her parents consistently played songs of icons Santana and Pink Floyd. She learned to play the guitar at age six, and was a self-taught pianist at age 14. She left college to pursue music full time, and in 2021 released her very first single, ‘Predictable.’ Since then, she has confronted the aspects of her diagnosis and mental health head-on by crafting Dysphoria. The two released tracks so far have already helped others to be heard and seen. ROREY has received recognition from the Zane Lowe Show, several publications, and been featured on countless Spotify and Apple Music playlists. She recently performed at Baby’s Alright in Brooklyn, NY, and at her very first headlining show at the Knitting Factory. With ROREY’s openness to discuss the vulnerability that comes with mental health, she will continue to make waves in the indie-pop realm. Get comfortable being uncomfortable with ROREY’s music by your side.
