The Ivy

Single review by Andy Cantu

Fresh off the heels of the announcement of their Spring Tour, indie pop duo The Ivy released their new single ‘Don’t Fall Asleep To This’ on February 21st in collaboration with the tour’s opener, Lyncs. The song was created from a sudden burst of inspiration during a writing trip in L.A. They’ve both expressed the single was the perfect blend of their individual styles with The Ivy stating, “The writing process felt so natural and seamless. We’re thrilled with what we created together.” The tour is set to start in mid March, and for those unfamiliar with one or both artists, this single is the perfect introduction before they stop in your city.

‘Don’t Fall Asleep To This’ is instantly reminiscent of The Ivy’s past discography with their viral single ‘Gold’ coming to mind as soon as the synthesizers start. However, the song quickly catches you off guard as the first vocals you hear belong to Lyncs. Both artists’ influence can be heard throughout the track, especially when you sit down and really listen to the lyrics. The song is a beautiful depiction of that feeling of yearning that comes with having a partner that is simultaneously so close, and yet so far. These feelings of hope, insecurity, and restlessness are a staple of Lyncs music, and her contribution to this song’s masterful lyrics is evident.

The title ‘Don’t Fall Asleep To This’ is taken from the song’s lyrics relating to the experience of waiting to reunite with your lover, and waiting for the sunrise while on a late night phone call with someone. The singer is asking their lover to stay awake to see the daylight because it’s only ten minutes away, and as a way of expressing their eagerness to see each other again. The fast, upbeat tempo of the song helps showcase how time seems to fly, but the soft vocals remind you time is moving very slowly for the two lovers. Lyrics of “I’m losing track of days” and “Don’t know how much I can take” convey a sense of desperation, and the feeling of wanting to give up despite knowing what you’re waiting for is so close. Still, the song ends on a hopeful note with both singers harmonizing as they promise to stay awake.
