The Ivy

Article by Fabiola Mejia

Indie band, The Ivy, has built their reputation and presence as musicians for their nostalgic songs that incorporate elements of ‘80s rock as well as their own effects. Originating from Oklahoma, the band currently consists of Shawn Abhari and Wyatt Clem who met while attending The Academy of Contemporary Music. Both developed a passion for music at a young age, and began collaborating as songwriters when they met. They formed The Ivy not long after with Shawn as the bassist and synth player while Wyatt leads on guitar and vocals. The band released their debut album, A Door Still Open, earlier this year in February, and have also released several EPs previously.

The year 2017 was a real turning point for the band when two of their songs ‘Gold’ and ‘Have You Ever Been In Love’ went viral on Spotify, earning them thousands of new followers. Shawn and Wyatt have both stated their music started off being heavily inspired by 80s bands, and has since evolved. It retains the nostalgic components and guitar solos, but also uses more synth and pop dynamics. Many of the songs on their new album touch on subjects of self-reflection and personal growth. The band promoted several of their new songs while on tour in 2023. Though there is no mention yet of another tour, The Ivy continues to share their musical projects with their fans on their Instagram page with no hints of slowing down. They recently played a show in their hometown for Halloween, and there is surely more to come from this duo.
