New Rules
Interview & Article by Brittany Ormiston
Three guitars. Three voices. Immeasurable talent, soul, and ambition. English-Irish pop band New Rules is making quite an impression with their recent release ‘Late In The Evening.’ The track is amidst the ever-growing list of music the band has released via Elektra Records. The trio – Alec McGarry, Nathan Lambert, and Ryan Meaney – was signed to the label a little over a year ago, and they mentioned how incredibly kind and supportive their team has been with each release. The response of ‘Late In The Evening’ has been nothing but positive, and the track is being added to more and more playlists across streaming platforms with each passing day.
The creative process of the new single had a different approach than past projects from the very start. The band’s main producer, Jamie Scott, originated the idea of having the vocals at the forefront with simplistic production utilized in the background to further showcase the band’s harmonies. Alec elaborated, “Honestly that was the intention of this record to show off the three-part harmony the whole way through the song, and have a more organic feel. It feels a lot more true to us, and what we grew up listening to and appreciating.” Simon & Garfunkel is one of many acts that inspired this single, and the band utilized aspects from folk music throughout the creation process. “We like acts that are a little bit more folk-y and rely on harmonies. The melodies are designed to go along with the harmonies. That’s the kind of song we really wanted to try,” shared Nathan. After two years and several revisions, the band perfectly crafted ‘Late In The Evening’ into a nostalgic, timeless track. New Rules hopes listeners will revisit this song years down the road just as the band circles back to music from their past quite often.
‘Late In The Evening’ has already surpassed 100,000 streams on Spotify, and listeners cannot get enough. The band continues to promote the track on TikTok, and the comments are incredibly heartwarming. One fan stated, “This makes me feel like we should be cuddled up in blankets around a campfire while y’all sing this to us.” This reiterates how powerful the trio’s vocals are, and several fans put a fun little twist on the lyrics by mentioning they need a hug to rebuild themselves after being knocked down by the track. New Rules thoroughly enjoys interacting with their supporters over social media, and takes their opinions into account when it comes to both unreleased and released music. The band’s bond with fans is and always will be a top priority. At the end of October, New Rules organized a 3-hour meet-up in LA and performed ‘Late In The Evening’ for fans for the very first time. The event included a little picnic accompanied by the perfect weather for an all around incredibly wholesome day. “We try to do that [fan meet-ups] in pretty much every city we go to…We know it’s one of our fan’s favorite things, and it feels like a really big part of the fan culture,” mentioned Ryan.
New Rules is looking forward to meeting as many fans as possible during their headlining tour in the United States starting at the end of November. The band considers the opportunity to headline in the US a blessing in and of itself. “It is a different level of surreal because America is so huge, and so far away from us…You’re putting faces to names and thinking wow there’s so many people over here that listen to our music,” shares Ryan. Once back in the US, New Rules is enthusiastic about celebrating Thanksgiving, trying a Philly Cheesesteak, and hitting some cities on tour they have not had the chance to visit yet. Keep an eye out for New Rules as they charm their way to the top with ethereal harmonies, amiable personalities, and artistry that will live on for years to come.
